Remains Recovery Missions to Restart in the Demilitarized Zone /

USAG Humphreys, South Korea  –   Remains Repatriation 2020

United Nations Command and the Ministry of National Defense will restart the Korean War remains recovery mission in the Demilitarized Zone beginning April 5.

This will be the third consecutive year that UNC and MND have collaborated to find the remains of Korean War service members in the Cheorwon region of the DMZ. Soldiers of the Republic of Korea, multinational United Nation forces, the Korean People’s Army, and the Chinese People’s Volunteer Army all fought in the area.

Once the demining and remains recovery mission resumes, it will eventually span across two locations: the ROK Task Force will continue remains recovery efforts on Arrowhead Hill, while beginning preparatory demining and construction efforts at White Horse Hill, also known as “Baekma.”

In support of the MND remains recovery operations, UNC will again provide an Australian rotational team to the DMZ to ensure compliance with the terms of Armistice and facilitate access. France and the United Kingdom provided members of the inaugural team in 2018, and Australia has provided the support for the last two years.

Demining and remains recovery efforts in the area have yielded significant results since 2018 with more than 9,125 mines and unexploded ordnance removed and more than 2,335 bone fragments and skeletal remains recovered.
 Remains Repatriation 2020-1
Close coordination between UNC, the MND Agency for KIA Recovery and Identification, the U.S. Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, and UNC-affiliated embassies will enable the identification and repatriation of these fallen heroes to their respective countries.

UNC remains committed to supporting and building confidence on the Korean Peninsula, and continues to work closely with the Republic of Korea government on all aspects of the UNC mission to support diplomatic efforts to maintain peace and security - a mission UNC has successfully executed for more than 67 years.
