CAMP HUMPHREYS, PYEONGTAEK, Republic of Korea –
Today, General Robert B. “Abe” Abrams, the Commander of United Nations Command (UNC), Combined Forces Command, and U.S. Forces Korea, attended an informal honors ceremony for human remains recovered at Arrowhead Ridge that are possibly those of a UNC member.
대한민국, 평택시 캠프험프리스 – 유엔군사령부 사령관 로버트 비 “에이브” 에이브럼스 대장은 오늘 화살머리고지에서 거행된 유엔군 추정 전사자 유해 봉영식에 참석하였다.
On June 5, 2019, human remains were located in the vicinity of Arrowhead Hill inside the demilitarized zone (DMZ) during excavation and demining efforts. Features of the remains, including artifacts located nearby, indicate they may be of European descent.
2019년 6월 5일, 유헤는 비무장지대내 화살머리 고지일대에서 진행된 유해발굴 작업과 지뢰제거 작업에서 발굴되었다. 유해발굴 현장에서 유품들과 함께 발굴된 유해는 유럽계 혈통인 것으로 추정되고 있다.
During the ceremony, the Republic of Korea’s Minister of National Defense, Jeong, Kyeong-doo said, “This Arrowhead Ridge is the place of a battle where ROK, US and French, and all the other young men fought to protect a free democracy.”
유해봉영 행사에서 대한민국 정경두 국방장관은, “ 화살머리고지는 한국군, 미군, 프랑스군이 전투를 벌였던 곳이며 젊은이들이 자유민주주의를 수호하기 위해 싸웠던 고”이라고 말했다.
Arrowhead Ridge was a former battle site during the Korean War. A number of battles took place at Arrowhead Ridge including American, French, Korean, and Chinese troops. Troops were engaged in trench warfare and hand-to-hand combat on the ridge that is also known as Hill 281. It is possible that hundreds of remains may be located near the historic battleground.
화살머리고지는 한국전동안 미군, 프랑스군, 한국군, 그리고 중공군이 치열하게 전투를 벌였던 전투현장이다. 장병들이 281고지로 알려진 화살고지에서 참호전, 육탄전을 벌였던 곳이다. 수백구의 전사자 유해가 역사적인 전투현장에 묻혀있는 것으로 추정된다.
“Today’s ceremony honors those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for democracy and the freedom of the Korean people,” said General Abrams. “UNC is committed to the recovery of our fallen heroes, fulfilling our vow to leave no one behind.”
유엔사 에이브럼스 사령관은 오늘의 행사는 민주주의와 한국민의 자유를 위해 희생한 전사자들을 추모하기 위한 것이다. 유엔군사령부는 전사한 영웅들의 유해를 한사람도 뒤에 남겨놓지 않도록 모두 발굴하겠다는 우리의 약속을 이행할 것.” 이라고 발혔다.
MAKRI’s recovery operations to collect and identify the Korean War-dead consists of four phases: search and exploration, recovery and collection, identification, and follow-up, which could be transferred to the family of the deceased or burial in the National Cemetery.
국방부유해발굴 감식단의 한국전 전사들의 신원확인 작업 과정은 4단계로 구성되어 있다. 즉 조사 및 탐사, 발굴 및 수습, 신원확인 그리고 신원 확인된 유해를 가족에게 인계하거나 국립현충원 묘역에 안장하게 된다.
