Lieutenant General Scott A. Winter

Deputy Commander, United Nations Command, Korea

Lieutenant General Winter currently serving as the Deputy Commander, United Nations Command in Korea. Prior to assuming his current role, he served as the Deputy Commanding General - Strategy and Plans for the U.S. Army Pacific and Commander of the 1st (Australian) Division, the Australian Army’s deployable warfighting formation. Lieutenant General Winter previously commanded Army’s 3rd Brigade in Townsville and the 1st Armoured Regiment in Darwin.

Lieutenant General Winter’s operational experience includes East Timor (J3 Watchkeeper 1999-2000), Iraq (CJ35 Planner HQ US V Corps 2003-04), Afghanistan (CJ5 Chief Future Operations HQ Resolute Support 2016) and domestically as JTF commander for the 2019 North Queensland Floods. Lieutenant General Winter also served as the Chief of Defence Force Liaison Officer to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Pentagon (2020-21) and as the HQJOC J5 Liaison Officer to the Netherlands Department of Defence (2006-07).

He is a graduate of the US Army CJFLCC Course, US DoD Pinnacle Course and the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies Senior Executive Course. Lieutenant General Winter is a Fellow of the Australian Centre for Defence and Strategic Studies and a graduate of the United Kingdom Advanced Command and Staff Course. Lieutenant General Winter holds a BA (Hons) from UNSW, an MA in International Relations from Deakin University and an MA in Defence and Strategic Studies from Kings College London. A graduate of the ADF School of Languages, LTGEN Winter speaks French and Dutch.

In the 2015 Australia Day Honours, Lieutenant General Winter was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia. He has been awarded the United States Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal.

Scott is married to Mireille, a solar farm engineer. They have two great kids, Connor and Leia, both recently graduated university.
